The BRN is authorized to approve registered nursing and advanced practice nursing programs in California. This approval system exists to ensure the program's compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.

Prelicensure nursing programs should be approved by BRN in advance. Approval of advanced practice nursing (e.g., nurse practitioner and nurse-midwifery) programs is voluntary and at the request of the program.
